“The United States is a great ‘melting pot,’ where everyone is allowed to melt and blend into American culture.”

To what extent have all racial and ethnic groups in the United States been “allowed” to blend, assimilate, and become fully integrated into American society?

In what ways, if any, does race and ethnicity matter in the United States?

  1. It used to be a melting pot, but in the last 30 years has been changed to salad. In the past people wanted to become American and melt into the rest of society. Nowadays, they want to be American in their own way - with their own language and customs. So it is a salad.

  2. "Melting pot" ? Sounds rather, untechnical..

Although, I think what you're saying is that America is a multi-cultural society.

If that is the case, look at different aspects of contemporary society to identify how people of different ethnicities and racial origrins have been able to "blend" into American society.

A few examples are media representation of ethnic minority groups..Perhaps democratic law, as far as I'm aware, there are none, or very little racially prejudiced laws that inhibit the opportunities given to people of American origin and people of foreign origin... [Excluding illegal immigrants, or non-permanent residents]

    Hope this helps a little.

  3. people discriminate and think 'hey if theyre from here then theyre like this' and so sometimes it is hard for some people to get jobs/ education/ friends of different races/ethnic groups. so yeah, people dont let people of other races/etnicities mix in, (sometimes unconciously,) just by generalizing them. like hey these people are smart and these people get in trouble with the law so lets hire her because she's one of these people and not him. stuff like that.

  4. Hey there,

Personally I believe that a good example of how people have allowed themselves to blend and become fully integrated is in the Voting Process. It's amazing how we have a caucasion woman and an african american man the frontrunners on the democratic ticket.

Another way is in the entertainment and athletic fields. It seems like everyone can appreciate a really good actor, a very funny person or an awesome athlete. That crosses racial and ethnic lines all the time.
