any dual or multi-band phone can be made to work in Europe.  Any European phone will work all over Europe (assuming there's a cell nearby for the service).

If you are in the US, check with your provider, and check online.  My friend used her regular phone there, and she had checked that information, her model number, online, first.

The first guy mentioned Amena. They don´t exist any more - they got taken over by Orange. I use that company here in Spain and have no complaints. All the companies are the same, really.

Any phone so long as it is dual band (900/1800MHz). This is just the frequency the mobile works at.  Most phones are Dual band these days.  Best too buy one unlocked to any network as it would be cheaper to use a Spanish SIM. Amena is probably the cheapest to call back home from and probably the cheapest for local calls.
