OK, so we already have an old digital piano, and it's really old, it doesn't sound like a piano (hardly close). So I want a new digital piano, and I need reasons for we would need a new one. Like very good reasons. (Don't ask why I need reasons)

  1. It would sure help if we knew exactly what brand/model your old piano is--and what you use it for.

If you are studying piano, then the best reason would be that you need an instrument that functions as closely as possible to an acoustic piano.  That means: full-sized keys, touch-sensitive keys, and weighted keys.

If you don't practice on an instrument with full-sized, touch-sensitive, weighted keys, then you will only with great effort (perhaps never) learn how to play a traditional acoustic piano well.  You just won't get the 'feel' of the mechanical keys if you're playing something with spring-loaded single-pole-switching chiclet keys!

If you are using it to play out, a newer keyboard will have a built-in tone bank with a wider range of instrument sounds.  Those sounds will be higher fidelity, and will have more realistic attack and decay characteristics.  All in all, better for the audience.  Moreover, if your old keyboard doesn't have a regular 1/4 inch audio output and a midi output, it's a fossil.

The broader tone bank is also very helpful to students when they practice, b/c changing the tone helps alleviate boredom.  Those scales won't seem such a burden if you can switch to space-synth-harpsichord.

Has the older instrument developed any glitches?  Does it have no sticky keys, no occasional static, no blanked notes?  Those are good reasons if you have them.

Keyboards with midi outputs can be plugged into a huge range of sound modules--they will be virtually limitless in tonal variety.

You don't mention how much polyphony your old keyboard features, or how many bytes of audio memory it uses.  Polyphony is an important consideration for keyboardists; as you advance, 16 note polyphony ought to be the minimum, and the more, the better.  More audio memory will render richer tone and enable faster playing.

    There, that's more than 2...

  2. You gave the reasons yourself! Evidently your old piano is old, and gives out a low-quality sound. So you need one that is better quality.
