  1. history quiz.

  2. Not to be a pain, by why does it have to be a one-off?  Ofsted are looking for the way that the school runs week to week, year to year. They are always more impressed when there is some continuity in learning.  Are you not in the middle (or at the end of) a history unit?  Look at what the children have learnt so far and then think where to take their learning next.

Other than that, if it has to be a one off, what about doing something on research - give each group a historical figure and free access to books, photographs and the Internet to research their person and feedback to the class, or to another group if there isn't time?

  3. If i remember right year 5 history has got tudors in. If so do a rollplay lesson of Queen Elizabeth 1st court around the time of the Armada crisis. Or Henry VIII court for the establishing of the Church of England.

  4. I did a great history lesson when ofsted came in to my year five class, about the mumification process, the kids all had a layered activity to do, showing the body, the canopic jar, the embalment, the sacophagus and the tomb./ It went down really well. Then the inspector went around and asked one of the kids why the egyptians preserved the body with embalming fluid, and one of my students said, because they had run out of jam!!! Well at least he remembered one detail from the week before!!!

In answer to your question, stick with the topic you have been learning, try to make it artefact based, and ask the children, What can you find out about the lives of the people living than through these aretefacts? I wish you best of luck
