No flip flops unless you want to look like a tourist.  Pumas are a stylish and comfortable option and will help you blend in.

Rockports, or Birkenstocks. Expensive, but they'll do for Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, England, Scotland, AND Wales.

one thing to think of investing in is walking socks.  even with walking shoes, those socks saved my feet!
