  1. A sentence is parallel when each item that it lists uses the same grammatical form.  The way to fix a non-parallel sentence is to make sure that the adjectives, nouns, and verbs are all in the same order. Parallelism can deal with sentence clauses, and notjust verbs and nouns

    So this is not parallel:

Those skeptical of the extent of global warming argue that short-term temperature data are an inadequate means of predicting long-term trends and point out that the scientific community remains divided over whether significant warming will occur and what impact it would have.

    But this is:

Those skeptical of the extent of global warming argue that short-term temperature data are an inadequate means of predicting long-term trends and point out that the scientific community remains divided on whether significant warming will occur and what impact will it have if it does.

(The tenses are parallel: 'will occur' || 'will have'. )

    Another example:

    Not parallel:

Global warming affects humans, animals, the environment, and is scary.

    Parallel:

Global warming is a frightening phenomena that affects humans, animals and the environment.
