im turning 15 next month and i really want to take the permit test thing but my parents wont let me.

they say 15 is too young. i agree but i still really want to drive.

i at least want to take the test and get my permit so i can say i have it.

and i think its better to learn young so then ill be more experienced instead of being 16 and like just learning.

its so un fairrrr.

im responsible and everything, but how can i convince them to let me get my permit?

  1. Although it's a frightening thought for parents ... My friends and I agree (WE ARE PROFESSIONAL DRIVERS)that a child should get as much experience as possible before getting their license... Many of my friends taught their kids on their own property at age 14 .... you should get your permit and drive with an instructor as early as possible . This way when you do get licensed you'll have as much experience as you can possibly have in handling a vehicle.

  2. My nephew got his at 15 and a half, but that is the legal age where I am from.  Try again in another few months, I would let the topic die because the more you bother them with it, the more likely they are to say no.

  3. As a parent of a 15 year old who will be 16 in two weeks, I think you need to understand that your parents may not think you are ready for it. What is the point of having the permit if you are not going to have your parents to take you to get the driving time? In our state, you have to have 50 hours of supervised driving time or take a drivers course to get your actual license. Most states are even changing their laws to be where you can't get a license until you are 18.

  4. I would help my child get it done and out of the way as soon as the law permits. (depending on the rules- if they are the same as they are now, my kids will have to wait until they are 18 because $350-$500 driving school is a requirement regardless of how much you drive with your parents and I will have three kids, thats just too much money when you can wait a couple years. My dad paid for it for me and I still didn't get my license, all they did was show videos for the hours requirement. What a waste.)

That doesn't mean they will be allowed to drive though. (even if they are 18, unless they get a job and buy their own car.) I would want to see good grades and responsible behavior. No amount of begging will change that if their grades are lacking.

  5. My oldest child is 8, I have friends whose children have started driving, I really am NOT looking forward to the day my little girl decides to drive. From a parent's perspective, I guess you just have to understand where they are coming from. You are their little child. It is not so much you they can not trust, it is WOW you are growing up. There are other cars on the road too, so they are just concerned about you, they love you.  I am sure there is a degree of fear in them as well.

  6. As the parent of 3 children older than you. My children learned how to drive farm equip at age 12. They got their farm permits at age 14. Yes they learned responsibility at a early age. Here are few possible reasons why your parents don't want you to get your permit yet.

Saying your responsible is one thing but you have to prove it to your parents not once but every day over a very long period of time. Trust is earned & not given.

Maybe your parents can't afford the increased cost in car insurance this year for you to be a driver. Yes insurance for a teenager goes thru the roof. The younger you are the higher the rate. Especially if you live in a city. Anywhere from $100 to $250+ every 6 months. Your parents may carry car insurance that prohibits under 16 yr old drivers from driving their car. Which gets them a cheaper insurance rate.

I realize that you want to drive really bad, but you need to talk to your parents rationally about getting your permit. It's not all about you. They may have more at stake than you realize. Especially if you are not an only child. Maybe they are saying your to young for one of the reasons above. Maybe your parents have to come to the realization that your are getting older. Some parents don't handle that very well.

Learning young to drive is ok & I'm all for it. Be patient & ready to take your test. You never know when your parents might walk up to you and say lets go get your permit.
