Not sure if this is relevant but I need a real phone number with a specific area code. I don't know how much that changes the above question.

  1. I use CallCentric, InPhonex, Les.net, and Voip.ms.

The question is, do you have a home phone now?  Or, did you want to use VoIP with a VoIP ATA adapter to receive the calls on?

You can use VoIP without having to use or purchase any VoIP equipment, if you already have a home phone, or cell.  All you have to do is purchase a DID (VoIP phone number) in the area code of your choice.  Then set that DID number to be Forwarded to your PSTN home, work, or cell phone number.

Here is how it is done with CallCentric:

    - Just open a pay-Per-Call account (free).

    - Purchase pre-paid calling credits ($10)

    - Purchase a Pay-Per-Minuter DID Phone Number ($1.95/month)

or, a Personal Unlimited DID incoming phone number for $5.95/month

    - Then in your user account DashBoard,  go to Preferences and set DID Forwarding to your phone number of choice.

Now all incoming calls to that DID phone number will be forwarded to your phone number of choice.

The cost of call forwarding is the same as their standard outgoing call rates (1.98¢ per min)

With Personal Unlimited package, there are no other incoming charges.

With Pay-Per-Call package, all incoming calls are charged at 1.5¢ per min.

If you prefer to use VoIP ATA phone adapter directly with your High-Speed Internet connection, then you can configure a Linksys PAP2T-NA or SPA-2102-NA with any of the above BYOD (bring your own device) VoIP services of your choice.  That is how I do it, too.  With these companies there are no contracts or long term obligations.  But, you do have to supply your own user-configurable (unlocked) ATA.
