I need a pilot?

I am writing a story about a man who is flying a plane. I don't know anything about about manned flight. I don't specifically know what I need to know. I just need to know things that might be important to the setting as his flying is crutial. What are common things that need to be dealt with? Common problems? Aspects universal to al planes. I think the plane will be very small and we will already be in the air when we begin.

What you need can not be obtained in one answer. You need to interlocute and keep a two way channel open, since the subject is vast and the scenarios would keep changing. Try and see how you can establish such a link so that your objective is fulfilled.
