  1. If I was you I would start with something that is more of a confidence builder like volleyball. If you throw him in karate with a bunch of boys that are experienced and have great motor skills it may hurt his confidence. If you get a wii video game I have heard that they are good for improving motor skills as well but have not tried the game myself. Good luck.

  2. There have been some really great suggestions!

After reading the posts, I thought about swimming.

It can be an individual sport or a team sport.

There is a great opportunity for improving muscle strength and coordinationa as well as cardiovascular improvement.

Swimming is easier on the joints too.

    Consider enrollment into swimming lessons.

    Hope this helps

  3. I'm not certain of where you live, but karate is excellent way to teach motor skills and especially balance. You would have to let the instructor know where your childs motor skills level are before beginning and he/she can take it from there.

Have you ever considered occupational (fine motor)  or physical (gross motor) therapy for your child? This may help him/her to understand how to motor plan and understand what it takes to obtain/retain and improve motor skills.

May I also suggest getting outside and play! Run, throw and catch, ride a bike, hula hooping, jumping rope or on a trampoline...this helps to develop muscles and balance in a fun way. Also, join park recreation leagues that are age-appropriate or enroll in summer sports camps. Just remember to have fun and don't forget - many motor skills come with age and practice.

    Good luck to you!

  4. Gymnastics is a excellent program for this. It will go buy there skill level. I wouldn't go with a park district program. I would find a private gym. I have seen many kids in our gym that have motor skill problems. My daughter has learning disabilities and gymnastics also helped with it. Boys and girls both love gymnastic.
