I need a program that converts audio files & video files to a compatible format, what program can I use? ?

I am looking for a program that converts audio files & video files to a format that is compatible with iPhone, PSP, and Windows Media Player. And I don't want a program that's a trial. You see, I downloaded some videos that are format .mpg and others .avi but I need to convert them to a format that a PSP will play, I'm guessing it's MP4 or MPEG? Any what program can I use that converts video and audio files?
