  2. Go to itunes and sign up for some podcasts for learning french.  Go to your library and take out some books and cd's.  Get your self a book or two with a pronunciation guide.

    There are many types of french programs.  Some are just for learning basics like you want, others are for learning everything.  It should be easy for you to figure out which is which.

  6. I highly recommend a small, pocket-sized phrase book such as the one put out by Rick Steves.  It has gotten me out of a couple of jams.  Here are a few words/phrases (and how to pronounce them).

    Yes = oui = we

    No = non = no

    Hello = bonjour (daytime)/bonsoir (evening) = bohnzhure / bonzwahr

    Please = s'il vous plait = seel voo play

    Thank you = merci = mair-see

    You're welcome = je vous en prie = zhuh voo zon pree

    You're welcome = de rien = duh ree-eh

    How are you? = comment allez-vous? = coh-mahn-tah-lay-voo?

    How are you? = ca va? = sah vah?

    How much? = combien coute? = kohm-bee-eh coot?

    Where is? = Ou est? = oo ay?

    What is? = Qu'est-ce que? = kes-kuh

    What time is it? = A quelle heure est-il? = ah kell hur ay-teel?

    Why = Pourquoi = poor kwah

    Because = parceque = parss-kuh

    Verb...you need to know how to conjugate them, which is way beyond the scope of a Yahoo! Answers question.  Trust me...get the guidebook.

  7. Try typing "French words and phrases" in the search engine and you will get a number of websites that have basic words that will be useful and some even have sound for proper pronunciation.
