  1. Open the book. read. Make a selection.

  2. After nearly 45 years, I still remember these words and questions spoken by Clarisse in the first few pages of Ray Bradbury's classic "Fahrenheit 451."  Her observations and questions seem as provocative today as they did years ago. [Note:  I have placed her words below in upper case, but they do not appear in upper case in the book.]

[Montag and Clarisse, having just met, are talking.  Clarisse says]

"I SOMETIMES THINK DRIVERS DON'T KNOW WHAT GRASS IS, OR FLOWERS, BECAUSE THEY NEVER SEE THEM SLOWLY."

[She's referring to how fast the cars go and recalls how her uncle once was arrested and jailed for two days for the crime of driving at too low a speed, 40 mph.]

    [Clarisse tells Montag]

"I RARELY WATCH THE PARLOUR WALLS OR GO TO RACES OR FUN PARKS.  SO I'VE LOTS OF TIME FIR CRAZY THOUGHTS.  HAVE YOU SEEN THE TWO HUNDRED-FOOT-LONG BILLBOARDS IN THE COUNTRY BEYOND TOWN?  DID YOU KNOW THAT ONCE BILLBOARDS WERE ONLY TWENTY FEET LONG? BUT CARS STARTED RUSHING BY SO QUICKLY THEY HAD TO STRETCH THE ADVERTISING OUT TO MAKE IT LAST."

[Clarisse asks Montag a simple yet fundamental question]

"ARE YOU HAPPY?" she [Clarisse] said. "Am I what?" he [Montag] cried. But she was gone - running in the moonlight. Her front door shut gently."
