I see that The Lorax is commonly used, but seems to be more about saving the environment. I need something a little broader. Thanks!

  1. There are 2 books that I love and use every year.  One is called Me on the Map - and I actually have my third graders write their own version of it.  It is great because it starts small (this is me, this is me in my room) and goes very broad (this is my country on the map of my planet) with great illustrations.

Another book is from the Dr. Seuss Library - There's  a Map on my Lap! - this goes into more detail about maps and geography.

So here's a list of some other good ones:

Me on the Map - Joan Sweeny

There's A Map in my Lap - Tish Rabe

Mapping Penny's World - Loreen Leedy

The News Hounds and the Great Balloon Race - Amy Axelrod + Tim Bowers

    Have fun and good luck!

  2. You're right. The Lorax is great for environment, but here are some others you might want to take a look at for geography:

Rooster's Off to See the World (Eric Carle)

As the Crow Flies: A First Book of Maps (Gail Hartman)

This is My House (Arthur Dorros)

The Scrambled States of America (Scholastic...on DVD too)

Unfortunately, that's all I can think of right now. Hope it helps you some.
