..................that has long, sharp needles or thorns and grows to about 5'-6' in height. There have been some breakins in our neighborhood and whoever it was, must have hidden in some bushes. I want something that will make them PAY a price for trying it.

  1. planted climbing roses on trellises under my windows great growers pretty flowers big sharp thorns

  2. Paul's 'scarlet rambler rose fits the bill.Long curving stems, vicious hooked thorns, grow as a climber on a support.

Free standing,it'll form a loose bush which can cover an area 6ft;by 6ft.As a bonus this rose carries attractive red flowers in large clusters.

  3. Well, I assume cactus won't grow in your area, so look to Pyracantha, but it won't stop at 6', more like 12', needs maintenance.

Barberries' thorns aren't generally that long but still a bother.

Russian Olives are trees that can be kept as shrubs...with work.

Hollies aren't that nice to snuggle against.......but you have to shop carefully......some have no prickles on the leaves while others have some painful points.

Osage orange but not readily available in the nursery trade.

    Roses.....yeah some would work.

Pampas grass has razor sharp edges to their grass blades.

  4. Barberry is a nasty bush simply covered in short thorns that will draw blood. Unless you buy a dwarf variety, it will grow 5-6 feet. There's a reason it's called barberry.

Firethorn (Pyracantha) is another. The thorns are more obvious on it that the barberry. But in my book, the barberry gets my vote for the king of painful barriers.
