Question:

I need a road bike...?

My budget is $1,200.00-ish

There are more miles on my current bike (a Specialized Hardrock) than my car, so I need something durable.

Disc Brakes are a must. Have them on my current bike and will never go back.

I live in the mountains so all I do is go up in elevation 2400+ feet and then descend... I would like something light-ish

Any recommendations?

(FYI, I'm going to test ride any recommendations)

  1. You will need to change your demand for disk brakes... you won't find them on a true road bike.

  2. well if you are looking for a road bike they don't come with brakes none of them do as i know. but if ur talking about a mountain bike try out a specialized crossover

  3. Hubby has a LeMond Wayzata which has the road performance you're looking for but is also quite comfortable and with the gearing, wheels, etc., you're looking for in a commuter bike.  No disc breaks (I can't think of any roadies that have disc breaks with the exception of tandems).

Since you're in reasonably fit shape and accustomed to cycling you might want to look into something racier than just a commuter bike.  That's a matter of personal taste.  I happen to adore Fuji, Cannondale & Specialized.  These companies make frame geometries that fit "me".

Go for fit first.  You can always upgrade componentry to suit your own personal style and needs.

  4. The disc brake factor really tightens down the choices, but I guess you are stuck.

Maybe you will like the Lemond Propad or the trek X0

These are cyclocross bikes so they are beefed up road bikes meant to handle the dirt. I'd switch the tires to 23's or 25's for a little more efficiency on the uphills.

  5. Disc brakes?

    Um, no.
