Since my son responds better to writing something that he feels has "a purpose", we signed up at this site, then searched for scholarships. Many require essays, so we are practicing using the topics provided for each scholarship. We found those here:

Also, you can sign up at Associated Content and they have a "suggested topics" section for content they would like to publish. A child under 18 can be published on there (without pay). You can find that here:
