  1. Ask Selva Marine if I remember correctly you can find them at the following I would guess at about 10hp for an 18 footer emergency.

  2. you,ll need a 5 hp at the most.

i wanted one last year for a shetland 535, and shopped around and the prices were all around the £750 mark.

i spoke to a mechanic at a local ships chandlers and he put me on to a mercury 4 hp. dirrerence was this had a sail prop that has a steeper pitch on it and was told that the yachting fraternity use these as they are lighter than a 5hp eqivalent.

in other words a 4hp sail prop does the same job as a standard 5hp.

now the bonus was that its £100 cheaper!

i took his word and bought it .used it as a second engine all last year and just put it in the water yesterday and it started first time.

mercury 4hp sail prop works for me.

hope this gives you a good starting point

  3. Something in the 3 or 4 hp range should suit your purposes. Personally I always carry a spare plug and plug spanner, plus a spare length of cord in case the starter cord breaks, and a spare shear pin as I often operate in shallow water - plus a small collection of useful tools.

The most important factor to consider is the length of the motor's leg - the bottom of the leg, prop and water intake must always be submerged.  Too short a length will mean the bottom of the leg coming out of the water frequently, with loss of cooling and much prop thrash.  Too long a leg will mean the bottom of the motor projecting too far below the hull and being vulnerable to damage.

  4. whatever you buy decide if you need a short or long shaft .

  5. When my father ran his trawler, he always had a seagull 4hp outboard just in case. It came in handy as his inboard broke down in the Bristol channel, and the little outboard got him back safely to the docks, after a 12 hour trip round the coast. You can probably get one in a chandlers for around 2-300 quid used. I saw one advertised on friday for 225 quid in a chndlers in Worcesters Diglis basin.

  6. a yamaha between 8 -15 hp
