  1. If there's a Fry's near you that'd be better than Radio Shack. Fry's also has an online store, link below.

Now before you settle on "cheap", what are you doing? If it's quick stuff - splicing wires, etc. - then a soldering gun is a good choice. Home Depot, Lowe's, Ace, etc sell that sort of thing.

If you're planning any sort of PCB assembly work you should spend a bit more on the iron: one with basic temp control and changeable tips. These run about $120 for a Hakko, Weller, etc. In the long run you'll do much better with that.

Digi-Key, Mouser, etc sell kits too.  There's a company called Techni-Tool that also has nice stuff. More links below.

  2. What do you consider to be "cheap"? Radio Shack is a place to get a "cheap" iron, that is about as useless as not having one to begin with. If you want to do anything in electrical/electronic work that involves the use of a soldering iron, then I suggest that you get as good as you can afford. You might have to save a while to do it, but a good quality iron is like a good tool, the better that it is, the longer that it will last. Those cheap irons from Radio Shack are going to be the death of any sensitive component that you might be soldering to a board. A cheap iron could cost you many hours of frustration, and damaged, or destroyed components that were expensive. Ungar, and Weller both make good irons. My Weller has a grounding shield, 3 wire power cord, and replaceable heating elements nad tips. I can change my heat range by replacing the heater element, as well as change the type of tip by unscrewing what is on the heater, and s******g on a new one. Are these irons cheap, no, they are not, but I don't destroy expensive components either.

  3. Try Radio Shack
