I need a solid but inexpensive wireless router?

I need a solid but inexpensive wireless router for my new laptop. I want to know if I should buy a wireless G or is the wireless N a newer and faster version of the G? If so is wireless N compatible with all laptops? I just got a new gateway and need a router soon. Please any info to help guide this non-tech savvy fella through this obstacle would be appreciated

Thanks

  1. A wireless N router would be perfect but to make it even better, you can put third party firmware like DD-WRT on it. The firmware is filled with a lot of stuff regular people like you and me won't ever use, but has some important and valuable features explained here: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wha...

Buy before you buy a wireless N router, make sure your laptop can support wireless N. It usually says "Wireless N compatible" or something like that. If it can't, you can always buy an wireless N adapter that looks like this: http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-WPC300N-Wi...

Linksys would be the best brand, since I had trouble in the past with Netgear.

  2. You should definately go with the wireless N. It is backwards compatible with G. A netgear or LinkSys would be your best bet. I am a Netgear fan myself, but I do not know if it is in your price range

  3. Try to get at least the cheapest one. Linksys, netgear, and dlink also Belkin they are not. Try Speedtouch, safecom something like. You can buy N router its compatible with any other a/b/g but if you need to get the fast is providing for 540Mbps although its not true speed you need to buy N usb adapter.

    Goodluck
