I'd like to purchase a bicycle. I will ride it to town and on mild to moderate trails. But mostly to town. I can spend no more than $200.

Any suggestions?

  1. I have to disagree about Mongoose.  It used to be a fine brand.  It is now owned by Pacific Cycles, the largest manufacturer of crappy bicycles in the world.

If you can't find a decent used bike on Craigslist take a look at the inexpensive bikes that Amazon sells, which they ship for free.  Stay away from the Wal-Mart type bikes.  In your price range they are junk.

Yes, I know Amazon sells Mongoose and other Pacific brands, but take a look at the Iron Horse and others that are a little higher priced.  The difference will be worth it.

It would be better to wait until you can save up a little more money than to buy a junky Pacific bicycle.

  2. Mongoose should probably be the best choice to lean on. I've actually had that bike as my starter and then moved onto freestyle bikes. Many of my family members have Mongoose and they use it to ride at the park for many years. It's priced usually under 200, I think mine was $169.
