I am piecing together a small quilt, very simple, just 6" squares of 4-5 colors. (36" X 42" total) I need a diagram so I can figure out the best way to lay them out. Any out there on the internet? Thanks!!

  1. There may be some on the internet, but why don't you just lay them out on the bed in random order and then move the ones that dont look right.

A patchwork quilt is just that - patchwork - so relax and don't worry about block placement in any way except what pleases YOUR eye.

Now if you need help with technique, there are lots of places to get help with stitching and backing and quilting.  This site is helpful for anyone from beginner to expert.

    Good Luck

  3. It's not a diagram, but I'd recommend playing with the design board on the eQuilter.com site.  From the main page, click on the Store link, then find fabrics in the colors you're using and put them in your cart (you don't have to buy them to play with the design board), then click on the Design Board button.  You can then put the fabrics into a layout (the swatches will be rectangles, but you can overlap them to make them more square) and move them around until you're happy with the layout.

You could also make a grid in a simple graphics program like Paint and color that in.

  4. The very best way to "preview" a layout is to work on a vertical surface (your design wall.)  A flannel sheet or piece of fabric on a blank wall will allow you to put the fabric squares up without pins!  This makes them easy to move about.  I used to work on the neutral carpet, but it's not only hard, it is also harder to get the best perspective and view.  The possibilities are endless, from "washing" the colors from light to dark in a diagonal direction, to following the rainbow's color progression, to just random placement that keeps the eye moving.  When you take a playful approach, things usually work out!  (I personally do not find computer programs that helpful, but it's different for everyone.)
