I'm going to be commuting 150 miles a day for work. I can probably afford about $10,000 for a used car. I don't want one that's too small, because I'll be driving in heavy snow in the winter. Which car would be the best choice?

  1. Neons are good on gas, but they're smaller cars. I would suggest a Buick, my 1997 Buick LeSabre gets 30 miles to the gallon. It's a V6 3800 engine.

  2. Several cars would fit the bill here:

Subaru Impreza 2.5RS:..All wheel drive so they go no matter what the weather.. over 30 mpg., very reliable,..and easily doable within your budget.

Chevy Cobalt/ Cavalier: Old school american.. very reliable.. cheap to fix, great MPG..front wheel drive a plus in snow..

Chevy Aveo: If I recall, the mechanical/ driveline is made by Toyota.. so VERY reliable.. great MPG ( 35 or better, with manual trans), don't know much else about them.. haven't seen many in for service as yet.

VW Golf/ Jetta TDi: The TDi  model is important here, as it denotes models equipped with the 1.9 L Turbo Diesel engine...always best in manual trans form ( 41/ 49 mpg.. have squeaked out 50 or better often), even the autos are great ( 37/ 45 mpg), though IMO, the auto transaxles are junk, and always easier / cheaper to replace a clutch..From personal experience with VW, when they run good, they are great; but the frequent electrical demons will keep your local shop very busy.

  3. Toyota Corolla or Nissan Sentra Any model before 2006 gets good gas mileage. Stay away from Fords (escort, focus etc). Good luck with your search 10k is alot for used car shopping, you might can get a new one!

Check kbb.com (kelley blue book) that is a site that gives you car reviews and you can read people comments on cars. It also gives you a mpg (miles per gallon) number for a used or new car you input in the search.

  4. STAY AWAY FROM NEON'S i have worked at a dodge dealership and they are junk they always have problems i say about half of them that comes in off the truck from the factory always had something wrong with them and that was before anyone even owned them i agree with the one guy the getta diesel is a great car there not to small there built very well and they last for a long time and i think they get something like 40 to 45 mpg there not as quiet as a gas engine but there not to noisy they save a lot of money thou

  5. Honda Civics normally go up to 40 try looking into one of those, such as the 01 models
