i want to make a dinning room into my bedroom, but there's no wall separating it from the living room! i'm hoping for something simple and cheap to do this... if it's even possible. i prefer something better than hanging curtains or sheets. it's a 92'' by 90'' opening. any thoughts?

  1. The easiest answer will end up being to build an actual wall  . . . you are talking about a few 2x4's, and maybe four or five sheets of drywall.  The time and effort will probably result in a more satisfactory result than any of the other options you mention.

You'll probably spend as much time and money trying to find a substitute as you will getting the wall done.  It could easily be done in an afternoon by a skilled carpenter.

  2. Find some junk dealers & buy a bunch of old doors & put hinges on them like a folding dividers,  then you can move them around as needed.

  3. Do you want a completely solid lightproof and soundproof solid wall, or just something to separate the two visually?

A set of those folding walls like Japanese shoji screens, or a set of bookshelves. You can hang a solid color fabric in strips from the ceiling, and then use fishing line to hang pictures or artwork or whatever from the ceiling so they look like they are attached to the "wall" instead of just a plain sheet with nothing on it.

Check an IKEA catalog or store, Cost Plus, etc. for more ideas?

    Google for "room divider"

  4. If in a bind, folding doors typically used for closets can be set up (they typically come in pairs for 48" to 72" width) on a floor with a slight bend to them.

A trip to either a fabric store (curtains, sheets), local department store (room divider), or hardware store (doors).

The possibilities are limited only by your imagination and creativity ;)

  5. This is a fairly simple thing to do if you have a circular saw, drill driver, and about half a day. You can build a simple wall with some 2x4s, a preframed door, some drywall or wood paneling, a large box of drywall screws, and some insulation.

You can get a book on framing from your local library, or at a local home center.
