I have been without a car for a few months now. My oil pump broke while I was on the highway so my engine stopped. I am 20 years old and go to college full time and have a job at holiday inn as a banquet server on the side. I work usually on the weekends and sometimes during the week. I would say that I get any were from $200 - $400 twice a month depending on the weddings. I have currently $1000 saved up. What would be a good used car for me to buy and how do you think I could afford it. I live at home and have no expenses. I would like a car that has very good gas mileage and is descent looking. What do you think?

  1. Brandon,

I have 2 boys in a similar state.  We've gone round and round.  They don't like it; but they can see/identify with the wisdom.

They'd like something sporty ---- not going to happen.

What you're looking for is a reliable car that depreciates rapidly.  (Gieser car)

    What car is that?

Generally, a GM car....but not any GM car.  Look for the 3800 engine/drive train.  These will be found on late model Buick LeSabres, Pontiac Bonneville, Oldsmobile Intrique and maybe some other Olds models as well.  Next best choice is the 3100 engine (it's almost the same engine with a shorter block)  These will be in Buick Century's.

With lots of oil changes, these cars will make it to 200K plus (they're notorious for minor oil leaks...don't worry about it...at the age of the car you'll be buying...they all leak).  Try not to consider a car beyond 105K miles on it...you want to drive it a little before it goes to the crusher.  You'll probably spend about $2000 - $2500 with tax and title.

Take it to a mechanic before you make an offer.  Even if you don't offer it's the cheapest $100 you'll ever spend.  To give you an notion.  I've brought 5 cars to our mechanic...I bought 2 based upon his appraisal. ( Buick w/ the 3100  and a Pontiac with the 3800) DON'T BE afraid to walk away....or you'll be parked on the side of the road again.  You're probably looking in the early to mid 90's for model year.

I won't let my boys get in debt.  I'd offer the same advice you Brandon.  Don't get into debt.

    Incidentally....the Buick gets 23 city/26 hwy.  Pontiac gets 21 city/27 highway...go figure?

    Good Luck!

  2. A Pontiac

  3. ask friends and neighbors for a local reliable mechanic who also sells a few cars on the side its your best bet for getting what you're looking for in your price range(if you happen to be in or near Ct. i can recommend one to you)
