  2. I've been to Italy- Rome, Florence, Cinque Terre (This one i recommend 2000%), Venice (i saw a woman fall into the canal).  My advice: say Bianco when the waiter comes to your table (this will get you white wine), if you eat the "free" bread on the table it is charged onto your check ("coperto"), gelato is awesome, and make an effort to speak italian - the italians appreciate it.

  3. Stay at the Cipriani in Venice.  Stay at the Villa D'este on Lake Come.  Beware of the qypsies in Rome.

  5. First, buy the book "Let's Go Italy".  There are so many ideas.  I did the only thing that most tourists do.  Venice, Florence and Rome.  The one thing I have to say is bring a outlet converter and an iron if you are staying in anything but hostels or 6 star hotels.  It Venice we stayed at Hotel Abbazia.  I can't say enough about them.  My husband was at the hospital when we were there, they called the hospital to check on him even when I didn't ask and told me.  One great example to brush up on your Italian before you visit Italy.  Oh, and they had these great patries filled with melted chocolate.  YUM!  In Venice you don't need to plan anything.  Eat in allies, nothing in a piazza.  If you walk along them at night you will find a ton of great restaurants and nightclubs.  In Florence we stayed at the Hotel Meridiana.  I liked this hotel.  If you are high end you probably won't.  The room was tackily faux painted, but our view was probably my favorite in Italy.  The large windows overlooked a small garden of the hotel.  More importantly it gave me a view of real Italian life.  There were people hanging out laundry, cooking and aruguing.  You have to be nosy and have a keen eye to see all this, but it was great.  I know this sounds so touristy, but I took the red double decker sight seeing bus.  You can catch it at any of the major sites (either David, Duomo, etc.).  It was about 20 Euro in March, but it was for 2 days.  You can hit so many spots and not have the congestion and trying to figure out the Italian street maps, while seeing all the sites in a specific time period.  As far as food, leave it alone near any tourist spot.  I have one exception for this.  ZaZa.  It's great.  A nice mix of locals and tourists.  Make sure you get the trio or meat and trio of soup.  It's plenty for two people.  Oh my goodness, it was so good.  I actually had some type of Italian liquor there (generally I would call it gasoline) I was supposed to dip cookies in.  Make sure you take time to go to Feosole (sp).  It's a great small town. I really didn't like Rome.  The only part I liked was Trestavere (sp).  I'm not saying I didn't appreciate the architecture and ruins, but the poverty, crime (which fortunatly I didn't experience but saw many people who did), and filth reminded me much of NYC.  I would definitely say in Rome take the 110 Trambus (another on/off double decker) for 13Euro.

Take the time to take the busses to the small towns outside the major cities, but make sure you have money to get back.  According to the book I mentioned earlier you basically have to jump in front of the busses to get them to stop, you really do.  We had to scream and bang as the bus was driving past us in order to get it to stop.

If you are in the city no need to buy a bus pass.  Nobody checks.  Don't eat in any restaurants for breakfast or lunch.  All the hotels provide a great breakfast.  Just make sure your on time for it.  We were actually excited for breakfast every morning becaue of the cheese.  I love cheese.  For lunch grab something and eat in a piazza.  It's so much cheaper.  Eating lunch in a restaurant cost about 30Euro, while grabbing some paninni, some salad or fruit, and a bottle of wine (they opened and provided plastic cups) was less than 15Euro.

Also, make sure you dress comfortable.  I read a ton of articles about how "Italians" dress and look, and I tried to fit in.  I think there are less Italians than tourists.  Get a good pair of fashionable walking shoes and comfy pants and go.  Don't try and be fancy except for dinner.

Make sure you find a supermarket.  I am a snacker and love to drink wine.  At the supermarket you can get a great bottle of wine, some bread, a great hunk of this creamy cheese and some cured meat for about 10Euro.  It was a great snack and dinner on nights when we had walked 10 hours.

And make sure you have a great camera.

  6. If you love arts, Tuscany is one of the best place for tourism. There you will find great works of Renaissance painters, sculptors and architects, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo Buonarroti, and Filippo Brunelleschi.

They said that the Leaning Tower of Pisa is famous because that is where Galileo supposedly conducted free fall physics experiments. The story says that he dropped a cannon ball and a wooden ball from the top of the bell tower in an effort to demonstrate that they both fall at the same rate.
