Question:

I need advice on archery!?

I've been wanting to do archery, but I'm not sure how to begin. I'm going to try it and buy a bow (if I enjoyed it), but how should I go about it? I want to learn to use a traditional longbow, but a composite bow seems to be the more practical choice. I am willing to put time and lessons into this. So, any advice for me?

  1. If you're in the US, go to http://www.usarchery.org, and search for a range in your area.  Some ranges have equipment that you can use free of charge, others might charge you a fee.  But the best thing is, you also have someone watching you, making sure you do things properly.

I like to start people on recurves, for one major reason.  Recurves are available in light pull weights.  Longbows are usually made in the heavier weights.

See first if you can find a range, if not, then the next best thing is an archery store with an indoor range.

Also since you like traditional archery, check out www.sca.org.  They will also know of any range in your area.

  2. You might wanna take a look at livenyx.com. It is a blog on archery and I think there is a store where you can look at its merchandise. Should have what you are looking for at a lower price.

  3. I found an archery store in the city I live in that had an indoor archery range, and they rented bows for a reasonable rate.  If you can find such a place near where you live, it will give you the opportunity to receive some basically free instruction and the chance to give archery a try before you buy anything.

Try googling "archery range" and the name if the city you live in or close to and see if anything comes up.  If there is an archery club inb your area, joining it will give you the chance to meet people who are really into archery, and the club will probably have a range and events.
