When you are interested in purchasing a used car, is it better to purchase it from the maker or another dealer that may have accepted it as a trade in?

  1. The best value on a used car is from a private person.  Car dealers have too much mark up.  For example, when I bought a new car, I was offered $4000 trade in for my old one.  They had a similar one on their lot for $8000.  I ended up selling it myself for $6000.  Both me and the person who bought it came out $2000 ahead.  The dealer would have made $4000.

Also, before you buy a used car, spend a little extra money to get in inspected by a mechanic of YOUR choosing.  Don't rely on the seller's inspection.  Paying $40 for an inspection can save you thousands of dollars in repairs later.

  2. Either way, it's a c**p shoot. You could be buying a car that someone just got tired of, or it could be a lemon that someone traded in because they were tired of having to get it fixed. If you don't know much about cars, take someone along with you that does, and have them look over the car extensively.  Check the oil and all the fluids, the suspension, brakes...everything.  And when you take it for a test drive, leave the stereo off, and listen to the car for any weird noises.

    Good luck.
