Actually, I am considering living in the States while my wife and infant son will be living there for a year. I will be supporting them. Of course, safety and cleanliness are important. I can afford rent up to $800/month. I thought about Tijuana, and I could live with them and drive across the border everyday, but I am worried about the hassle. Seems like waiting in line 2 hours each day would be a pain. Also concerned about safety in TJ. Have been toying with the idea of San Felipe and me coming to visit on weekends. Again, it's only for a year or so. I wish to say this with sensitivity to all concerned. Our lack of Spanish speaking skills means we would benefit from a community with a population of English speaking people while we blend in and make friends with all inhabitants. Thanks for any advice.

  1. Why doesn't your wife get a job?

  2. Am I missing something here?

If you are going to work in the US, why wouldn't you just live in the US where you could live together and avoid the border mess.It doesn't make sense to me why you would subject yourself to horrorific traffic, separate your family, commute, pay double rent as well as the added costs of Mexican auto insurance, visas, permits & tolls etc.?

You say you want to live in a Spanish speaking country but that you would need to live with or near English speakers. What would be the point of living in a foreign country? If your wife or child had some sort of emergency you or she might waste critical time trying to make yourself understood or spend it looking for someone who spoke Spanish to translate for you. If I had an infant son or daughter I would want my child as close to the best medical care possible. That would be Scripps,San Diego not the local Cruz Roja clinic in Tiajuana,Rosarita or San Felipe. I just can't figure out why something that appears so simple has to be this complicated so I have to be missing something.

Good luck,I sincerely hope you can find a solution that keeps you and your family safe.
