MOW is a card game that little people know. It stands for "my own way." The point of the game is to realize how it works as you are playing, and only the dealer knows all 17 rules. I have been playing it lately and I can't figure all of them out...if you know this game, please help me!

Thanks in advance.

  1. Mauii

Mauii (mow-ee)is a card game that is sweeping the landscape.

(The game has been called or spelled "maui" or "mau" or "mow mow" in various circles.)

This page is to provide a quick reference for the rules of this extremely fun game that is never the same game each time it is played.

    The Rules

First, the purpose of this game is to have fun, and not necessarily to win.

The game is very much like Uno or Crazy Eights. You want to get rid of all of your cards to win a hand.

The game is played with two decks of standard playing cards. Each player is dealt seven cards. The remaining cards are placed in the center of the table as the draw deck.

The top card is turned over to start the discard pile. The first player tries to play on that card. You can play a card if you have either the same card or same suit as the top card in the pile. If you don't have a card to play, you must draw one card and then play moves to the next player.

If a seven is discarded, the next player must play another seven (in this case same suit does not apply). If that player has no seven, that player must draw two cards. Once a player has drawn two cards, the seven showing is now a “dead seven” and so play is the same as with the other cards where you can play another seven or another card of the same suit.

The play of an Ace reverses the direction of play.

The play of an eight skips the next person in the direction of play.

Anytime you play a spade, you must say it is a spade because you must always “call a spade a spade.”

The jack of spades is a wild card. When played you must declare it as a spade and then declare what card it is to represent (and it must be a card that is legal to be played on whatever card is showing on the discard pile).

If you have the exact same card as any card played (both same card and same suit - there are two decks to make this possible) you can play it by calling out “same card” and putting it on its duplicate as long as you play it before the next card is played. This does not count as a turn and anyone at the table can play “same card” regardless of whether it is their turn.

    You cannot ask any questions.

There is one exception to the no questions rule. If anyone desires to ask a question or sort out any confusions in the game, he/she can call out “point of order” at which time everyone at the table must put their cards down and during point of order nobody is allowed to touch their own cards. During point of order questions may be asked but all other rules in the game still apply. When questions are finished, the person who called the point of order can re-establish play by stating whose turn it is, stating the direction of play, and then saying “end of point of order” at which point players may pick up their cards and play begins again. (No questions can be asked except during point of order.)

If anyone spots a violation of the rules, he/she may penalize the offense by giving a penalty card to the player who broke the rule (penalty cards are drawn from the draw pile).

If it is determined that a penalty card was given without a violation or penalty actually happening, the person who gave the penalty will get the penalty card for a false penalty violation.

Delay of game is a penalty. (This usually occurs when a player is clearly unaware that it is their turn and is not trying to play a card.)

If you get down to your last card in your hand, you must call out “last card.”

When you play your last card, you call out “mauii” and then the hand is over. You win the hand and the right to invent/create/declare any rule that you want to add to the basic rules listed on this page. Every time a hand is won, the new rule is added to all of the previous rules in the basic rules and to the other rules added during that game. (No rule that is added can remove any of the basic rules listed here.)

    Keep playing until you drop.
