Look into Newton.  He's no only responsible for the theories of motion and gravity but also wrote a book called Optics in which he described the nature of light.

You could also research all the strange things that happen to matter as it approached the speed of light.  What does it mean to the universe that nothing can go faster than the speed of light.

How do we know how fast light is?  one little question will easily open up a whole essay.
