I'm starting my second year of teaching soon - high school math and physics. One problem that I had last year in my physics classes was that while most of them picked up on scientific notation quickly, there were a few who didn't totally get it. That plagued them all year long, because it's involved in EVERYTHING that is done in that class. So this year I'm trying to come up with a way to make sure everyone knows it really well. I want it to be so ingrained in their heads, they automatically mentally translate every number they see into scientific notation without even thinking about it. The problem is, high school juniors and seniors don't usually think it's important, so they don't study it much. Any ideas for a game or project I can give them to help them learn it?
