I am a new DSLR user and want to get a start at using lighting in my pictures. I am pretty much just going to be using this to take pictures of my new baby. I want to be able to take pictures with the background being pure white and I think a slave flash is what you need for this, but I don't know. I know people will say get the sb-400 but I kind of wanted to see if anybody had some maybe cheaper and more versatile options. What do you think I should get.

  1. I use Canon so I can't offer actual flash options, but I will say this... Since you are looking the more economical end of things, be sure what ever flash you buy actually puts out more than the built in flash provides.  (I'm fairly sure yours has a built in...?)  There are a couple of flashes out there that actually provide the same amount or even less of what your built in is capable of.

As for getting the white background...all you need is some window light, a white sheet or blanket and the right settings on your camera then you have the white background. :)  You don't even need a flash to accomplish this with a good window. Just use the window light.  That's one of the great things about a SLR. :)  You can adjust the settings to accomadate some great natural light.

  2. The SB 400 is the entry level strobe for Nikon. I have the SB800 and while it is not cheaper it is paret of the creative lighting system and will give you a flash that is powerful and versitile. One word of warning if you decide to go with an older used flash. Many older stobes have more energy feeding back into the camera system than the newer digital circuits can handle. Make sure whatever strobe you use limits energy back to the camera to  6 volts or less. If it does not you will find it works a while then stops working as you have burned out the control circuit in the camera. If you have an older strobe you simply love and want to use get something like the Wien safe strobe sync
