I need an inexpensive sewing machine that can do 'rolled edges' on delicate fabrics like chiffon and silk, for scarves.

Are there any inexpensive models around $100-$150?

  1. If you already have a sewing machine, there is an attachment foot that you can buy that will roll while you sew.

  2. Rolled hemming is generally considered to be a serger function, and you're not going to get a new serger that works well for that kind of money.

You can do narrow hemming on a sewing machine -- again, you're not going to get a new machine that does a really nice job of narrow hemming  for that price, but you can find good used machines that will do a nice job for that amount.  There are special feet for doing this job -- I notice some are called "rolled hem" by some people, but traditionally, these are "narrow hems":

*The* best instructions for narrow hemming are in Carol Ahles' book, Fine Machine Sewing -- your public library may well have a copy of it.

As far as buying a sewing machine, here's a good starter faq:

  3. Kenmore from Sears ;)))
