My Students find Shakepeare boring, but would take more in if it was in a quiz/game format. Does anyone know of any resources? Thanks

  1. I've found these quizzes for The tempest and Romeo and Juliet - hope they help.

  2. I find that I gain my students interest through Socratic circle discussions, with the inner and outer circles.  I ask questions about the characters motivations, the students opinions, which students are more like which characters, etc.  This seems to be the students' favorite activity, and I feel that they are actually being engaged by relating to the characters and their motivations. The students just speak, don't need to raise their hands.  They need to provide 5 significant insights to get an A, and the grades go down from there.  Depending on the class level, one contribution is worth either a 60 or a 50.  0 is failing, but in some classes I will offer up an essay to make up for the discussion, but only for partial credit, as I want them to enhance their speaking skills.

As far as games go, I play a basketball game.  The class is divided into two teams.  I go back and forth between teams and ask individual students questions.  If the student gets the answer correct, he earns one point for his team. He then has the opportunity to earn up to 9 more points (never happens) by throwing three shots at his chosen length away from my paper basketball hoop.  Then I give 5 extra quiz points to the team that wins the game. :)  Good luck!  I love teaching Romeo and Juliet!

  3. Games kids like to play are those that reflect things they already know, maybe a Jeopardy-like game, Wheel of Fortune where they fill in the blanks in teams and buy vowels, etc.  With Jeopardy, any kind of categories can be made like "Men of Romeo and Juliet" or "Famous Quotes from Romeo and Juliet"
