I work for a contractor who has bid roofing job which no one else would. The shingles, at least the top layer are curling up, the facia and soffits are rotten, and the roof is full of peaks and valleys. The plan is to cover the entire roof with thick tarpaper and install a steel roofing system. Without removing any of the roofing, is there a way that we can install the new roof and be reasonably assured that it will hold? I suggested that we attach 1x2's to the existing roof and install the steel to it...what can we do?

  1. You sure you want all the weight up there?

    and

To build up over the peaks and valleys worries me, I suspect some rot under there that would be a bad idea to build upon

  2. You probably could strip the roof. I would use 1x4. But this is not going to be a GOOD job unless you first strip the old roofing and repair damaged areas first. Then put on the new roof. I would suggest the owners have that done. And at the same time overhand ,sofitt and fascia can be repaired. It won't be cheap.

  3. MY HUSBAND IS A BUILDING CONTRACTOR AND WE HAD TO REPLACE A ROOF ON A HOUSE AND WE STRIPPED THE ROOF WITH ONE X TWOS AND IT WORKED WELL.

  4. The first thing to do is to remove all the old shingles, and felt paper.  Then inspect the sheathing and trusses, and replace any damage.  The fact that there is peaks and valleys in the roof, You can rest assured that there is damaged  trusses, and/or sheathing.  You must also replace the damaged  facia and soffits.

If you are not gonna do the job properly, don't do it at all.

  5. David P.L had it right !! there is no short cut here. Out with the old before u install anything new. U gotta get rid of all the old membranes and inspect and repair the structure. It is probably not that bad and not  too expensive; and I am certain the homeowner does not want to pay !! thats why no one else got the job.

Do it right or let it leak !!
