You have a lot of good suggestions here, but the first thing that came to my mind was Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Here's a YouTube link. You can find selections for each season in the related videos area.

This would be good on a lot of levels since you can find any mood you need and the music is familar to many. It is also beautiful. I hope this is helpful to you.

Explosions in the Sky has a lot of great instrumental songs.lots of sad sounding ones

what about

clint mansell's Lux Aeterna. i think it's really good and it has a climatic feel to it and it's powerful.it starts slow, but it transforms entirely. here is a video with the song in the movie, requiem for a dream. hope you like it.

Perhaps you can listen to some classical tunes and decide on one for yourself for this interesting project. I think something classical would be your best bet.
