I need bar codes for some products i sell in my store. The suppliers don't provide them. How do i create them?

Basically, i have some products that i sell in my store. However, some brands/products don't have barcodes, and i need to create some for my checkout scanners. How can i create the barcodes, and which format do i use eg UPC, EAN .... etc?

If you just have a few items that need it then you can also get a special page printed up with up to about 8 codes on it and leave it near the register.  That way you don't have to make up a whole bunch of little stickers for the products.
