  1. The equipment you use should not be based on peer pressure and what other kids on your team have.  You need to use the equipment that works best for you.  If you have a $1000 budget you have plenty.  Go hit demo clubs and see what works best, then try Golf Galaxy or Golfsmith and look at their used clubs.  They have great stuff at much less than new prices.  Buying the most expensive, latest equipment is not going to improve your game, and it is the results that matter, not who has the fanciest stuff in their bag.

  2. ok, if you want great clubs for cheap go to golf galaxy and buy a used driver. THey have great ones for around 100 to 200. By used woods or buy the brand new clevland hibore woods for 127 a peice. I would buy these if thougth the cost a lot. Then cheap adams used hybrids they should all be in good shape for 150. Then go nice but cheap with irons around 400 but make sure there used. get a mizuno sand wedge for 99. With a nice set a pitchin wedge will come with the irons. Foucs your money on your putter cause you will need it the most. IF you have 250 left go online and go to cotour putters they make the best but they are a little pricey. The putters arent casted. But there milled giving you more control and a perfect putter head.( in a cast putter youll get a chance of a dud )    MY suggestions , Get a gallaway fusion. the new hibore woods for 127 a peice, adams idea hybrids used, clevland irons ( the taylor made racs are good to) used or new but not the very nice ones, a mizuona sand wedge, and cotour putter( or whatever feels nice spen a good amounton this clcause youlll need it for a long time) if you dont like these just take this advice stay away from big brand names lik taylormade or nike theycharge to much for the clubs which arent nice at all.

  3. Go somewhere where you can demo many different woods and irons.  Don't ever blindly buy clubs.  Find out which ones feel right.  If you are an improving 9 handicap I would suggest some irons in between a blade and a cavity back.  This will give you added control you will need as your ballstriking improves. Once you figure out what works for you then check ebay and you'll most likely find what you need for cheap.  Also, If you can, try and get them custom fitted at a local golf shop...Good luck!!
