  1. Emerald cedars -  put in a drip irrigation sprinkler system with them. Very low maintenance shrubs, trim them once or twice a year. Good cover, great noise blockers, very little foliage drop as long as they get regular watering.

  2. im from california too and i've noticed that a lot of the landscape is evergreens. you can use arborvitaes, junipers, oleanders, red tip photinias, altheas(bloom nicely). umm, yup thats all i can think of right now

  3. Hedges grow quickly and thick but you do need to trim them once established.

  4. Your options are endless especially for growing in California.

I am a California transplant in Missouri now...I planted privet hedges they have grown to 12 feet high and completely block the noise and the messy view from the neighbors next door.

The price was right! and I prune them in an informal style rather than boxed or rounded.

    Spread: 2'

    Hardiness Zone: 3 - 7

They look like twigs (bare root)  when they arrive but grow very fast up to 15 feet.

When pruning make sure to pick up all the branches because they will take root and sprout up.

  5. How about a mix of citrus?  Oranges, lemons, grapefruit should get large, give you some fruit, and stay green.

  6. Ficus grows well in shrubs. If you want them to grow tall, I love boganvillias. they are tall and shrubby, like alot of sunlight, and have really nice flowers all the time (but I live in Florida.)

  7. Italian Cypress they are dense and tall

  8. BAMBOO is the best plant to plant to screen out neighbors and noise and look great doing it at the same time.  Just make sure you get the clumping kind and not the running variety.  It's very fast growing as well!  I swear during the summer months my bamboo grows a foot a day!  What ever you decide to use don't use cypress or junipers.  Those are the most ugliest plants and usually become rat and bug infested!

  9. I would suggest evergreen bushes because they look sort of like trees, they grow really fast, and best of all they keep their leaves all year round so there isn't any down time when your problem will become a problem again. We have some in our front yard to block out neighbors and it works really well. Plus you can find some that look really good and give your yard a landscaped look.

  10. i am not sure about the spelling , but  rhoderdendrum grows fast and if planted about six feet apart they will be like a solid wall in about 3 years keep them watered real well
