Hi folks I'm a directing major for theatre (not film) and I'm trying to expand my repertoire. I decided to take Ballet, Hip Hop, Jazz and Modern this semester.

I'm curious as to what is the best dance styles that I should take. I thought Ballet would be good to understand the foundations, Modern good for artistry, Hip Hop is a very down to earth dance style, and Jazz is theatrical.

I don't want to burn out though, so I need to choose at least 3 of the 4. Please opinions.

  1. idk deff keep ballet modern and jazz

they are really funn. hip hop is basically really tiring and a lot of fast arm move ments and stuff

  2. Do you mean you only want to choose three of the four, in order to not burn out (get tired, not want to do it an more etc.)? Your question doesn't make sense.

If i were you i would take all four! It will broaden your horizons tremendiously! But if you only want to take 3, i suggest...

Ballet - you are right. Great foundation. If you take ballet, and get good at it, other styles are picked up very very easily. Ballet will be the cement you build your dance life around. You will understand how to move better, stand better, feel the music etc.

Jazz - you are working in theatre! Definately take jazz! If you can, try and find musical theatre instead, or along with this class. But definately jazz!

Modern - modern will help you to express yourself through music, and just gain and appreciation for dance that jazz and ballet may not give you.

The reason i wouldnt take hip hop is because you probably wont need in for theatre. But you could always add it later on in your dance life!

  3. jazz and modern have a lot of similarities so id probably choose one or the other. ballet is always a good foundation it will give you strength stability and flexibility then hip hop will give you sharp and defined moves. i do suggest you start ballet and hip hop at the same time though because if you do ballet for a while and then try to do hip hop it can be hard to adjust to the style.

in my personal opinion id drop modern.
