Question:

I need determination?

I want to practice piano for two hours, knowing the end results will well-earned, and a beautiful song, but I just can't get myself to continue carrying on playing once I sit down and play for 15 minutes or so. I hate practicing, but I want to be able to tell myself that with determination, I can do this for two hours. I've been spending too long time in doing things that I want, and not being disciplined enough. I keep telling myself that I'll be proud of my end results, but it doesn't work.

I can do it for other small things, like telling myself not to eat a certain type of snack because it's unhealthy, but somehow I can't do it for longer time-consuming/bigger/long-term things.

Could you help me please??

  1. why do you want to play the piano?  that's what you should think about when you are trying to encourage yourself.  is it because you want to look cool in front of somebody? if you do, try  imagining yourself  playing the piano in front of that person while practicing, that way you don't have to concentrate on the practicing part.

  2. ahhh Dermination,  Try thinking about this quote and really set your mind and sitting down and playing. However if you dont enjoy it dont even try.

"You've got to get up every morning with determination if you're going to go to bed with satisfaction.”

  3. get determined and music is about passion just ask yourself that?

  4. Determination for music is inside you that wants to bust out.  You know you are doing what computer programmers did when they were growing up, yes reading music.  Did you know most computer programmers earn over 100k in their first years of work.

  5. Clearly, this is a phychological question.

You do not have a passion to practicing ...

it's not a rational issue but emotional.

So, go to find someone who has passion on this or find someone who can help you establish the passion...

    Good luck !

  6. Don't tell yourself you're going to practice for two hours because then you'll be FORCING yourself to stay at the piano, when you really don't want to.

Go into practice as normal. Don't look at the clock and start practicing what you have trouble with. Set goals (ie. I want to play this exercise 5 times without stopping) so your practice time is worth it.

Review old songs so that they're still in your memory, do scales and exercises also. Practice isn't just about getting down that part of a song you can't play, it's a chance to revisit some things as well.
