  1. Raw hide is 1% fat it's not bad but you to keep an eye on the dogs if the raw hide becomes smaller. Good for their teeth.

  2. Bad not safe throw them away do not buy them. What happens is they get soft after the dog chews them for a while then the dog thinks its like a piece of meat and trys to swallow it.It stays in its mass form and can choke the dog or cause blockage in the stomach or intestines.Better to use some thing like raw bones or nyla bones.Tilks Mom

  3. Bad, bad, bad stuff.  It should be banned.  Rawhide expands when it gets wet, so it can cause obstructions in the digestive system of a dog.  An obstruction is fatal if not removed by surgery.

  4.     It depends on your dog's style of eating them. My GSD swallowed them whole so wasn't allowed them but my other dogs gnawed on them until they were small and then I took them away. Generally I don't use them if I'm leaving the house.

  5. Rawhides are not digestable and cause many surgery requiring blockages every year. They also do very little in the way of dental health as they leave a plaque causing film on the teeth.

For me rawhide isn't worth it, neither are chew hooves, or most pig ears.

My dogs get their teeth cleaning and chewing action mainly through their prey model raw diet. They get a variety of raw meaty bones which are digestable, full of nutrients, and clean the teeth at the same time.

They also get bully sticks and pig ears from the butcher now and then. Pig ears from the butcher aren't the same as the ones you normally see. Most pig ears are hard as a rock, and not very safe, made this way by the cooking process. Pig ears from the butcher aren't like this and are safe. They are soft and pliable.

  6. About a week ago,  I was at pet co (with my puppy). There was this sales lady for Nutro. She came up to use, and started feeding my puppy treats (without even asking me, This made me mad, but thats not the point.............)

She started to tell us how rawhides would KILL our dogs. She went on and on, telling me my dogs would DIE because of them. (I have been giving my dgs rawhides all of their lives.)

The lady recomends us some nutro form of dog bone, to give our puppy, instead of rawhide.  She said it was INTENDED for puppies. We buy it. You see, I have a 12 week puppy at home. (along with 2 other adult dogs) When we get home, We read on the package, and the bone this lady sold us, said DO NOT GIVE TO PUPPIES. It said, puppies would choke on this Nutro bone. All in all, this sales lady, SOLD us a bone, that could possible Kill my beautiful puppy.

So, we call Petco to complain. Saying that this lady sold us a bone, not intended for puppies. Then we just told her, that the lady did not ask us permisssion to feed our puppy treats. (For example, would you wanrt someone to walk up to your baby, and give her a french fire? I don't think so. What happens if my dog was allergic to the treats this women was giving her? Thats how I felt with my puppy. I don't mind people giving her treats, but they have to ASK me FIRST!)

It turns out, this lady had recieved several complaints about this lady. Another person had overheard the nutro salesmen telling us about rawhides killing our puppy, She had complained to the store manager, telling her, what she her told to us.

Basically, the sotre manager was out raged for several reasons. First of all, the nutro lady gave our puppy treats with no permission. (This is apparently NOT allowed in any pet store. What would hgave happened if my dog was allergic to the treats?) That manager aggreed.

Second of all, The women sold us a bone that Would KIll or shoke my puppy to death. Rawhides arent the problem, this lady is.

Third of all, the women had told other people what she told my family aout rawhides, and other dog foods. Apparently, Purina puppy food would also KILL my dogs! The nurtro lady, dod all of this to SELL us on NUTRO products,

That store manager, told us, that she would not allow this nutro lady back in the sotre. She told us the truth about rawhides. Rawhides are onl,y dangerous if your dog consumes them (basically all in one bite). This could lead your dog to choke or something on a piece of the rawhide. BUt, if your dog just chews on them, they are fine! Once the piece becomes to small, you throw it away, and give your pup a new rawhide. So, all in all, they are safe, as long as they are not too small.

Sorry, to rant and trell you this story, but this nutro lady made me Very upset,

    Have a good day!

  7. Rawhide is not digestible. If a large piece is swallowed, it can cause an intestinal blockage, which can be fatal if not caught in time. Also, a lot of rawhide is imported from other countries. There are no standards for importing rawhide, and the rawhide may have been dipped in bleach to whiten it or even other harsher, more dangerous chemicals.

Many dogs eat rawhide their entire lives with no ill effects, but I personally don't like the risk.

Here are the fully digestible alternatives I use for my dog:

    - bully sticks

    - moo tubes (dried beef trachea)

    - tendons

    - dried salmon skin chews

    .

  8. I say bad.  They can cause a dog to get impacted or even to bloat.  Bloat is a deadly condition.  I never use them.

  9. My dogs both love rawhide, the one time we tried to wean them off it they went mad and started chewing everything in sight!  They need to be used sensibly though, throwing away bits which are too small for your dog (similar to not buying toys too small for your dog) and supervising until you can trust them are good ideas.  Ours have hours of fun, on an evening when we want them to wind down and chill out they are allowed their chews and they can sit and chew on them for hours!

If you have any concerns though, I suggest you ask the advice of your breeder (if u have one) or your vet.

    xx

  10. It depends on the dog. Some dogs choke because they eat them too fast. So it really should be watched, my dog loves rawhides I buy the biggest then throw away when it gets to the choking size. But never give them with out supoervision. Also watch the dog and see how he eats it or chews and determine if you trust giving them. Good Luck!

  11. General rule -- if it's uncooked it's fine.. make sure you dont givem chicken bones and your uncooked meat doesnt have much fat on it.. I wouldn't advise against rawhide.... but dont take it from me, google it and look up sites to be certain. Ask a vet

  12. not really sure i give it to my dogs an they love it i dont see the harm in it occasionally.

  13. it depends on what kind of  dog

  14. We allow our dogs rawhide's, but most people freak out if you say that.  My dogs eat rawhide's and not my hands and not my furniture.  We give them a big rawhide if we are going to be gone from the house for a long time.  That rawhide tells our dogs that they have to hold their potty all day, so when they see that rawhide, they know not to eat or drink until we get home, and the rawhide gives them something to pacify themselves with so they don't destroy the house and bark all day.
