The device has to be one for saftey and it has to be using one if not more forces to operate.

  1. how about the thing they use to keep a hole from caving in? it looks like an H with plates on the sides and a bar in the middle and it uses pressure to keep the dirt from falling in. it is a safety device my husband explained to me to make me feel better about him working underground. he is a commercial electrician. im sorry i dont know what it is called, he is asleep or i would ask him.

  2. We use fail safe devices such as valves.....they operate with power & pnuematics (air) using soleniods....in the event of a power outage, these valves are designed to either open or close to a safe condition (depending on the application) just using the air....

Earth Leakage Circuit Breakers work by tripping when there is a current detected on the Earth... the force being power...

  3. I think the best example, and very common is the seat belt in cars; which are inertial: pull steadily and slowly on them, and they give way, so that you can lean forward.  In a sudden stop however, inertia takes over, and they don't give.

  4. A safety valve lifts to relieve air, water or steam pressure when the system pressure (force) reaches the set point of the valve spring.  Even water heater in a home have safety valves as well as many systems in a power plant.
