Okay well, like two-three days ago, my ferret fell from my basement steps. (The door leading there is always closed unless my ferrets are sleeping, then we leave it open for the cats) Well anyway, my ferret snuck passed me and went to the stair and started climbing down, (hes done this before with out my permission though of course (sneaky bugger)) he was at the second highest step and my cat, started smacking him around (at this point i went running to the basement to get him) and my ferret starting backing up and my stairs don't have a back to them, so he backed up to far and was hanging on the edge of the stair and right when i was about to grab him he let go. (it was a horrifying sight to see my baby fall)

So i went running down and gently grabbed him and put him on my moms bed to examine him, he was scared but alright, he was breathing a bit hard which i dont blame him cause he fell 8-9 feet. But he was able to walk, and my sister who worked with ferrets examined him to, and his heart was fine, his spine was fine, all bones were okay. But hes been very tired, the day he fell, he just wanted to sleep, so i stayed up all night watching him and keeping food and water near him so he wouldnt need to move.

But now hes perfectly fine, but weak. So ive beens putting him through physical activies with his brother to build up strength,

But i was wondering does anyone know of any good activites you use for your ferrets?

Mine is perfectly fine but still a bit shooken up so thats why we didnt take him to the vet, and plus, the vets around here no NOTHING about ferrets. A vet almost killed my other one but thats a diff story. But please if you have any good physical strength activites my little guy could do, please tell me them.

Thank you =)

  1. aww... ur such a good owner.

anyways, he'll be a little weak for the next week, but just give him lots of love and affection. Play with him a lot, but with the other ferrets also(so none of them get lonely) and try to make them play.

Basically just give him lots of love and keep a good eye on him:)

That same exact thing happened to me except my niece dropped him out the second story window(she was two) form then on she only got to hold him when sitting down. Anyways, we landed in a bush, nothing  broken and he wasn't injured just a little stunned, for the first couple days, then tired for a couple weeks.

don't worry he will bounce back

    Hope that Helps

  2. Poor thing! God bless him.

Anyway, he's a little shooken up as you know, so he's probably just a little scared. Ferrets also like to hide that they are sick/injured, so even if the vets are worthless, try. Maybe you can go to another clinic that has more experience? Perhaps one out of town?

As for activities, try playing with toys, making him run his little butt off :-). Don't overwhelm him though, still cuddle with him and give him LOVE. (:

  3. I have had some really hairy experiences with my ferrets and accidents so I thought I would give you my opinion.

I had a ferret who escaped outside and was gone for over two weeks.  We found her but she was very close to death.  She had a huge hole in her neck which looked like it was broken and she was septic.  I got her and worked my magic and it has been about a year now and she is a happy kind of retarded girl, but doing really well.  I spent one week just feeding and re hydrating her, she couldn't walk, just scooted in a circle, just a mess.  One thing I can tell you about ferrets.  They cling to life tenaciously.  They don't want to give up their life and will do what ever it takes to recover.

The philosophy I use for helping my ferrets recover from really bad accidents or illness, is to give them medical attention and then give them the opportunity to heal by providing a soothing atmosphere so they can get on with healing  themselves.  I force feed if needed, hydrate if needed but I give them a nice warm bed in a quiet dark room so they can feel safe and get a rejuvenating sleep and ultimately heal.  I don't try to make them do therapy or anything but just concentrate on healing.  That girl of mine who escaped death has a crooked neck and a big bald spot where the animal attacked her but she can run and climb just like before but with a lipse to the side.  I use this method with all my animals who are convalescing and need time to heal.  If your ferret's p**p looks normal, no dark stool, and he is eating, I would just let him do what he knows is best for his body.  If he is weak, he may have sustained some internal injury that is mending or is at  least sore and needing some down time.  Cut him some slack and he will let you know if he is feeling good or if he needs to see a vet. Give him the rest he needs and he will come back on his own.  When he gets more active, play with him, put some treats in the seat of a chair so he has to climb to reach them. He will move when he is ready.
