My son suffers from severe anxiety and I will begin homeschooling him in October. I can't afford to buy him the text books and was wondering if anyone new where I could possibly get them free or cheap?

  1. The Book Samaritan may be able to help you, but you need to apply before the deadline. There are also FREE online charter schools that will provide you with a computer, books and everything that you need including teacher assistance.

  2. I don't know what state you live in but K-12 is an excellent program and its free .They send you books and your child uses a computer and books for schooling,if you don't have a computer they send you one. The schoolwork is set up for your child everyday on-line its awesome!Go to k-12 .com hope that helps.Or try connection academy its free too.

  3. Homeschooling can get very expensive....Good luck with it.

Try looking on craigslist for your area or try signing up with Freecycle.

  4. Here's a site that lists hundreds of books according to reading level.  For each book, there's a link to local libraries.  These are well-known classic books so most libraries have them.  Here's the link for elementary grade levels.  The site has all levels and types listed.

You Don't Necessarily need textbooks. Get a hold of  the book called What Every 4th Grader Needs to Know. And then use this as your oultine of what to teach him along with your state standards(these should be available online too).

Then find stuff resources/books/websites or use the library.

    Best of Luck!

  6. If you'll go to the World Book Encyclopedia website, there's a list called "Typical Course of Study" which outlines what schools usually teach at each grade level.  Or, you can go to www.homeschooling.about.com and find the same list, but with some links to sites related to that topic.  It's not complete, but it helps.  Or, you can look up your state's Department of Education website, and look for something called Benchmarks, or Foundations, or Grade-Level Expectations, something like that, where they list in pretty much detail what's expected for each grade in school.

Then you go to the library and look online for the information you need to cover those topics.  You'll probably need a math book, because those things can be difficult to cover in a logical order without a math book.  You can find some really cheap on used curriculum website, often with teacher materials too.

www.homeschoolclassifieds.com  is just one such site.

    Good Luck and Best Wishes!

  7. ChaRm's link is incorrect, it's K12.com.

Here's the list of participating schools by state.  It's public schooling at home:

  8. Check out the K-12 program. http://www.k12.com/ Most school districts pay for their tuition.  They offer all the curriculum you need, support from private teachers, and special materials including a computer.

It is a great program especially for those who don't know where to start.

My sister uses this program and she loves it.
