I have two female baby guinea pig, they run away when ever i put my hand in, i know that this is because it is there natural instints and i understand that it really can never be changed, but when ever i pull one of them out she starts to shake, and she sometimes makes little squeaks. I feel bad that she is so scared and i put her back, she then runs, aways to her friend. Im not sure how to make them both used to me, i talk to them ever time i walk into my room, and i try to get them to come closer with some veggies, but they are never interested. Does anyone know any good tips on how i could make them somewhat more friendly. thanks for all your help

  1. You are right, they naturally are afraid.

Stay consistant, sit by their cage and just let your hand rest in it so they can get used to it.  Keep talking to them.  Keep offering them veggies from your hand.  (use something long, like celery so they can start eating on it but still feel like they have some distance).  When you hold them make sure they feel safe.  Piggies like to held close to your body, mine usually preferred to tuck their heads in my elbow.  Always make sure to keep your movements slow so you don't startle them.

    Good luck!

  2. You know that they are really skittish.  It is their nature.  It is good that you have a pair together since they are social animals.  You just need to be patient.  Keep interacting with them.  You have to earn their trust.  I have had my guinea pigs for almost six months now and they still run away from me when I try to pick them up.  Sometimes I will just have to try and grab one without hurting it.  You have to hold them close to you and talk gently to them.  Guinea pigs love to be held.  I can hold mine for hours and they love it.  Just give it time.  Just make sure that you are interacting with them every single day.

  3. Patience...it'll come with time..we have 3..they are still terrified of me after 4 years but i rarely handle them..my daughter plays with them every day and they will run right to her

  4. Taming your Guinea Pig is vital-especially if you want to hold your Guinea Pig regularly and to make sure that you both have a good relationship. A tame Guinea Pig will be happier, and will be easier to care for- more importantly- when you go on holiday or visit the vets.

The most important thing to remember when training your Guinea Pig is to be consistent.

This means that when you handle your Guinea Pig you need to make sure you hold it in the same position and for a reasonable amount of time.

If your Guinea Pig struggles, keep hold of it firmly and put it down in a safe place. If you put your Guinea Pig down straight away; you will teach it that when it struggles it will be put down and so your Guinea Pig will always struggle.

  5. Give your guinea pig time to get used to you. Instead of grabbing her to pick her up, just lay your open hand down next to her in the cage. Let her sniff your hand and get to know your scent. Speak to her softly and let her get familiar with your voice. You can begin to put tasty treats in your hand to entice your guinea pig, such as fresh vegetables or alfalfa.

Try to stroke him gently when your guinea pig seems comfortable with your hand in the cage. As he gets used to your touch, he will grow to like it and probably begin to purr every time you pet him. Give him treats during your visit so he will associate you with a pleasant experience.

Continue to spend time with your hand in the cage, face up. Guinea pigs are curious and once she is comfortable with you, she may climb right into your hand. Stroke him gently and let her feel safe in your hand before you try to pick her up. Eventually you can lift her in your hand, protecting her from falling with your other hand.

Know that the kindest and safest way to pick up your guinea pig is to get him to walk into your hand. While most guinea pigs will do this, there are a few who don't. You can pick up a guinea pig when he is calm, by closing your hand around his middle and lifting him up. Quickly get your other hand underneath him to support his weight and give him a feeling of security.

    Hope this helps

  6. most guinea pigs do that. when you take ur guinea pig out it has been iwth the other one for a while so it fells like you might take it away from its friends. take one out then take the other one too. then they will be happy together.

  7. just hold them alot. let them kno ur not gonna hurt them.

when she shakes just keep holding her and talk to her in a whistper voice. then they get used to  u and kno tht u dont want to hurt them.
