I need help, coming to Italy in mid-September, Looking for work and language help.?

I am a 24 year old male college student. I have always been fascinated with Italy and it's culture. I have decided to come to Italy(Rome) in September. I will have enough money to last about 2 months. I'm studying the language now but I won't be fluent by then. I am looking for advice on cheap accomodations so I can stay as long as possible. Also I'd like to find a local that wouldn't mind showing me around a little and just to have someone to call if I need some advice while there. I am also gonna try to find some work while there, maybe in a restaurant or bar or something similar. Thank you and any advice is appreciated.

and you can join or participate to some of the AICR events http://www.aicrome.org/

you can also buy the weekly magazine wanted in  Rome http://www.wantedinrome.com/

but if you want to learn the language forget the above (becouse you will be speak english...)
