What is the figure of speech for the following?

"But after that he knew the voice of a gun."

    It's making an inanimate object human-like.  A gun can't actually have a voice!


  2. It really depends on the context of the work and the author's style. I'm going to guess that the "voice of a gun" figuratively links the situation to either violence or death. After whatever it is that happened to this character, he became acquainted with violence/death because he has heard guns being fired and the consequences.

    since a gun doesn't have a voice, it's just referring to someone who knew or heard a murder-like voice, sort of like a voice that can kills someone or threaten, like how a gun's sound do that
