  1. The suggested absolute minimum recommended is 3 gallons (see link).  Even if you keep it in a 1.7 gallon tank, please put a filter on it or you're going to be doing an awful lot of water changes.

  2. If you're careful about maintaining water quality then he'll be okay.  I kept my first betta in a tank about that size and he did well, though knowing what I know now I prefer larger tanks.  1 gallon is the absolute minimum, but for a happy betta I'd really recommend upgrading to  2.5-5 gallons.  Bigger tanks are actually easier to care for once they have been properly cycled.  Waste builds up quickly in a small tank, but with a cycled and filtered larger tank the waste is broken down and you save yourself from having to do constant water changes.

Plus with a bigger tank you can put in a heater.  Bettas do best in warm water, but even the smallest heaters might fry your fish in a 1.7 gallon tank.  With small, unheated tanks, the tank is particularly susceptible to temperature fluctuation so it's important to keep the tank in a spot that has a consistently warm temperature, away from windows and drafts.

  3. Ur doing awesome if u want its color to come out more then feed in freeze dried blood worms not that neutritios but help in color inrichment try adn get a filter and a heater keep it around 77-80 is the ideal heat for a betta since it is a tropical fish

  4. that tank is plenty fine. mine lives in a fish bowl maybe half that size. just so you know betas do live in somewhat shallow water. betas breathe regular air, so make sure it is easy for them to get it. change half the water at least once a week.

  5. Just because Bettas can survive in a small tank, doesn't mean a Betta will be happy in a small tank. You'll get different answers from different people, but in my opinion Bettas need at *LEAST* 2.5 gallons per fish, 5 gallons or more if you want a happy one.

Bettas, like all tropical fish, need warm water, so if you don't have a heater in your fish tank (or the fish tank where he might live eventually at) buy one now. Temperature around 76 F to 79 F is acceptable with tropical fish. Also, like all fish your Betta will need a heater. When you see non-active, lethargic Bettas it's because they're generally cold and sometimes even depressed (yes, fish can get depressed) because of their household. :(

You will hear that Bettas can live up to two years, but they can live muuch more than that, mine is about 7 years old. :) They need decent housing and proper care, that's all. They're wonderful, bright, intelligent fish species with tons of personality and plenty of attitude.

Another thing everybody should know about Bettas is that they aren't the psychotic serial murderer fish like so many think of them to be. They're actually peaceful fish that can easily be kept in a community aquarium, as long as you make sure the species are compatible:

Bettas generally get along perfectly with small-finned fish, mine lives with Neon Tetras, corydora catfish, and Oto catfish, never seen any signs of aggression. Just make sure that the other fish aren't super hyper fast movers like zebra danios (which will bug or tire the slow betta) or nippy fish that will target long fins like tiger barbs. And obviously, no fish that is big enough to eat the betta. :) Bettas are very territorial, and will fight other Bettas to establish territory. Fish with long fins and sometimes even bright colors will make a Betta believe that it is another Betta, and it will try to attack it. But that's about it.

You can keep female bettas in one same medium tank, but expect to see some nipping when you first introduce them; they're not attacking each other, they're just establishing a pecking order to determine who will be the boss out of all the fish. :)
